Picking the right unit size saves money and frustration. Too small and you end up squeezing items in or renting a second unit; too big and you pay for air. This guide walks you through a simple way to estimate what you need before you speak to us.
Remember that our staff do this every day. Once you have a rough list, request a quote or call 011 041 6166 and we will recommend a unit from our range of sizes and configurations.
Step 1: Make an inventory
Walk through your home or office and list what is going into storage. Group items into large furniture, appliances, boxes and odd shapes such as bicycles, mirrors or tools. Counting boxes is easier once you have packed a room or two, so estimate generously.
Step 2: Think about access
If you will visit often, plan a walkway down the middle of the unit and keep the things you need near the door. If you are storing long-term and rarely need access, you can pack more tightly. Access needs can make a real difference to the unit size you choose.
Step 3: Use the height
Stacking well is the best way to save space.
- Use sturdy, same-sized packing boxes so they stack evenly
- Put heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top
- Stand couches on end only if they are designed for it; otherwise keep them flat
- Dismantle beds, tables and shelving where you can
- Fill drawers and cupboards with light items to use the space inside furniture
Step 4: Match to a size category
As a rough rule, a few boxes and small items suit a small unit; the contents of a one-bedroom flat usually suit a medium unit; and a family home or business stock calls for a large unit. See our unit sizes page for more examples of what fits in each category.
Step 5: Check special needs
Wooden furniture, artwork, documents and electronics may be better off in a climate-controlled unit. If you will need help moving, ask about move-in transport. Then work through our storage checklist before you sign.
Common questions
What if I choose the wrong size?
Talk to us. Where another suitable unit is available, we will try to help you move to a better fit.
Is it better to go slightly bigger?
A little extra room for a walkway is useful if you will visit often. If you rarely need access, a snugger fit can save money. Our staff can advise.
Can you help me estimate?
Yes. Send us your list of items in a quote request, or visit and we will show you units in person.
Do you have dimensions for each unit?
Unit sizes and availability vary, so we confirm options with your quote. Call 011 041 6166 for current availability.
